Would you love to learn to draw?

This 6-week evening drawing class at the Calistoga Art Center may be just what you're looking for....

Drawing may be something you learn to do with your hand, but it is ultimately all about learning to see — and it gives you a strong foundation for working in any other art medium.

You'll begin with sketching basics, and learn about:

  • drawing tools
  • line drawing and the use of tone
  • light and shadow
  • positive and negative space
  • getting the proportions of things right
  • giving your drawings a sense of volume
  • 1-point and 2-point perspective
  • and how to put it all into practice in the creation of your own artwork.

You'll also look at the drawings of other artists and learn about drawing and sketching resources you can refer to later for information and inspiration.

Drawing and sketching will bring you a new appreciation of the world around you — you will find yourself seeing with new eyes. Come and join us!

SECRETS OF COLOR HARMONY TAUGHT BY KAREN LYNN INGALLS SATURDAY & SUNDAY, MARCH 19 & 20, 10 AM — 5 PM BOTH DAYS — BRING A LUNCH! CALISTOGA ART CENTER, 1435 NORTH OAK STREET, CALISTOGA
2016-03-12

Secrets of Color Harmony Taught by Karen Lynn Ingalls

Saturday & Sunday, March 19 & 20, 10 AM — 5 PM both days —

Bring a lunch!  Calistoga Art Center, 1435 North Oak Street, Calistoga

http://www.napavalleyartworkshops.com/secrets-of-color-harmony.html

Do you wish you could get your colors to work together better in your paintings?

Colors can be like children – sometimes they just don't play together well, and it’s frustrating when they don’t. How do you change that? How do you make colors play – and work – together well in a painting?

In this two-day workshop, you will learn foolproof secrets of creating beautiful, harmonious color in your paintings – and you'll put them into practice!

You will learn and apply ten specific, surefire methods of creating color harmony.

You will also learn about color wheels (two kinds), complementary colors, and color mixing, and you'll practice what you've learned. Then you will experiment with different color palettes, using acrylic paints, so you can compare and contrast the results of making different color choices.

Next, you will learn how to introduce new colors into your work and ensure they all play well together, how to recognize and work with warm and cool colors, and more. We'll do all this with friendly, versatile, water-soluble acrylic paints — but what you learn will be applicable to other media as well.

You'll also learn more about how and why colors work with – or against – each other, how and why the same color changes depending on where you use it, and how to use that knowledge to create stronger compositions. It's color theory, simplified and made practical, so that you can apply what you learn in your own paintings.

Over the course of the weekend, you will create your own book of examples that you can use as an invaluable color reference later. And you will receive Karen's mini-book on The Secrets of Color Harmony, as a resource.

Taming those uncooperative colors really isn’t as hard as it may seem, once you know these secrets and have a chance to put them into practice.

Cost:  $180 for CAC members and $200 for non-members, materials not included

Materials fee:  $25, payable to the instructor (all the materials you'll need to use are provided, including paints, paper, brushes, palettes, your book materials, and Karen's mini-book on The Secrets of Color Harmony)

If you have taken Secrets of Color Harmony, Part 1, and would like to sign up for Sunday (which would have been your Part 2), please contact Calistoga Art Center — and bring your book with you!

For Part 1 previous participants only:

Cost: $90 for CAC members, $100 for non-members

Materials fee: $15 (bring your book and we'll add to it!)

Sign up by Wednesday, March 16, 2016

Karen needs to know by then in order to have the right amount of materials for everyone in the workshop.

Maximum of 12 people, minimum of 4

ACRYLIC PAINTING 101 TAUGHT BY KAREN LYNN INGALLS FEBRUARY 27 & 28, 10 AM - 5 PM BOTH DAYS (BRING A LUNCH!)
2016-02-09

Acrylic Painting 101

Taught by Karen Lynn Ingalls

Saturday & Sunday, February 27 & 28, 10 AM - 5 PM both days (Bring a lunch!)

Calistoga Art Center, 1435 North Oak Street, Calistoga

http://www.napavalleyartworkshops.com/acrylic-painting-101.html

New to acrylics?  Wondering what they're all about?  Come find out, and unleash your creativity as you play with paint!

In this work-(play)-shop, we'll explore many of the different ways you can apply paint to paper or canvas.  You will have a

chance to play and experiment with paint, to explore how it feels.  You'll also learn basic color mixing.  Then you'll create two

paintings, experimenting with both abstract painting and painting from an object as you learn how to use acrylic paints in a spirit of discovery.

On the second day, you'll learn how to use glazes and be introduced to acrylic mediums.  Then you'll explore using acrylic paints in a way

that looks like watercolors in a third painting, and you'll be able to develop all three of your paintings with Karen's guidance and support.

This is an excellent introduction to acrylic painting, whether you've never painted before, or whether you're experienced in another medium and want to

discover just what it is you can do in acrylics that you can't in any other paint medium.

Workshop:  $180 for current Calistoga Art Center members, $200 for non-members

Materials Fee: $25 for all the materials and supplies you’ll need for the weekend (Email Karen at k[email protected] for a materials list, if you’d like to bring your own)
